You're just a clique away from MySpace's `Top 8'

News/Social Networks/Myspace/Marc Ramirez
Found on: belleville.com

SEATTLE - In the online world of MySpace, her best friend kept messaging a boy that Jasmine Gervais didn't like. Before long, the two friends argued.

Then her friend did the unthinkable: In the "Heroes" portion of her MySpace profile, she replaced Jasmine's photo with, as Jasmine puts it, "a picture of this stupid boy." With that, Jasmine, a 16-year-old student at Seattle's Center School, moved her friend from the No. 1 spot in her Top 8 MySpace friends to No. 8. Barely clinging to honored status! But then her friend did the same.

What next? "I deleted her," Jasmine says. "I thought it was hilarious. She called me up, screaming, `What are you thinking? That's so bitchy.' And then she hung up on me."

FITTING IN ONLINE

In MySpace, everyone can hear you scream. And amid the self-conscious and peer-pressured terrain that is teendom, MySpace - and the "Top 8" friends shown on one's main profile page - can broadcast your place in the hierarchy more bluntly and publicly than ever.

"For some people, the Top 8 is like a ranking scale of who you like the most to who you somewhat sort of like," says Seattle student Joanne Nguyen, 16. "It's just like high school."

The social-networking site popular with youths lets users create their own profile pages, including an invitation-only gallery of their friends' profile photos. The top friends get the top space. But being put there, or being left out, can be taken as a public statement about where one stands, making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside - or like you totally want to throw a hissy fit.

The other day I visited www.garageband.com for the first time. I’ve been in bands before, so I was very interested in the concept of having unsigned bands be rated by the layman. User opinion has always worked for me on www.citysearch.com, www.yelp.com, www.amazon.com, etc, so I thought I’d find some great, unsigned bands that other people were into. Very rarely does music make me want to rip off my headphones, but out of five different songs, I ripped my headphones off four times. The first song was bad, but I gave it a full listen. I thought for sure that the next song would be better. Nope. And with each song, I got more and more annoyed at what I was listening to. It seemed an impossible task to wade through enough awful lyrics and artsy chord progressions before a good song emerged. Garageband, please leave that job to the professionals.

Couplets.com Can Help Couples Make Close Friends, Socialize More

Socail Networks/Web Culture/Couplets
Found on: clickpress.com

A recent Duke University study found that Americans have smaller social networks than they did 20 years ago, including fewer contacts through neighbors, clubs and organizations. That makes it more difficult for today’s busy couples to make and find new “couple friends.” But Couplets.com, a growing online social network, is designed to help couples meet other, like-minded couples. The service – currently available free – enables member couples to easily identify and connect with other couples based on shared interests and locations.

The Duke University study found that more evidence of increasing social fragmentation and isolation known as “Bowling Alone,” from a book by Harvard sociologist Robert D. Putnam. While the current study and Dr. Putnam’s book focus on individuals, it seems clear that this trend also affects couples.

“We founded Couplets.com because we realized that couples need new ways to meet other couples because based on our own experience we knew people were not joining organizations, which has been a traditional way for couples meet new people,” said Jay Chalnick, president, Couplets.com. “We created Couplets.com because we saw lots of couples who didn’t have the time or the networks to find new friends who share their interests. Couples can select from more than 40 different activities they enjoy, including bowling, so they never have to bowl alone again.”

Metallica Capitulates to iTunes, Napster

Metallica, perceived as the bane of Napster and heavy-metal foe of all things digitally downloadable, has cast aside principle and cast its lot with what it said, tongue in cheek, was an "upstart outfit who we feel may very well have a bright future" - Apple's iTunes, that is. The LA Times reports that the band, one of the few (along with the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Radiohead) to resist selling individual songs online, has relented.

"Over the last year or so, we have seen an ever-growing number of Metallica fans using online sites like iTunes to get their music," ABC News quotes the band as announcing on its website. "So, in continuing with the tradition of offering our albums for sale online (which we've been doing for a few years through various sites), as well as making our live concerts available for download in their entirety, we are now offering fans the opportunity to obtain our songs individually."

Via a partnership with Zango (the former 180solutions) the Warner Bros. website, an online destination for kids, has been offering free games via adware that Zango installs on users' computers. The catch: some of the ads that kids may end up seeing could be for porn, writes the Washington Post.

The Warner site sends those clicking on the Zango sponsor logo to a "Fun Stuff" page offering games, with a pre-checked box adjacent to an "I confirm I am 18 or older" above the end-user license agreement (EULA), several blogs reported yesterday - and others more than two months ago - explaining the deceptive process that could end up serving porn ads to kids.

The site came back to “normal” service within a few hours, but after some unreliable performance today, MySpace.com is down completely. This is obviously causing a massive spike in the number of MySpace-related posts at Technorati, particularly from LiveJournal blogs (search for “myspace not working” and you’ll see what I mean).

Youth Study: Women Like Social Networks, Men Like Sports Sites

Youth Trends, a website researcher, conducted a study in July 2006 with males and females between age 16 and 24. The research measures the percent of respondents to the top 10 sites. Google is favored among 31 percent of females and 34 percent of males.

However, for subsequent choices, males and females differ, according to Youth Trends. Females prefer social network sites such as Facebook and MySpace, and males tend to prefer ESPN, Google and Yahoo. "For females on the web right now, posting and sharing photos is big, so you can essentially say: females are to digital photos as males are to sports," Josh Weil of Youth Trends is quoted as saying.

Nice. Very funny.

Anybody who's offended over this needs to lighten up. It's a freaking joke, and there is clearly no intent on claiming superiority or inferiority based on race, which is what racism is.

Seriously folks, learn what racism is before you call something racist.

It's a joke about stereotypes, yes, but in no way is it being presented in a racist manner.

YouTube's 'New' Terms Still Fleece Musicians

Billy Bragg have been complaining about networking/music site MySpace's terms of use – and rightfully so. MySpace is said to be changing its tune, and should be posting updated terms soon (currently, its About page is offline).

The video site YouTube constitutes an equal or larger threat to small content producers. Before you upload that video of your 19-person indie rocker reggae band, for instance, you may want to read the fine print. YouTube's "new" Terms & Conditions allow them to sell whatever you uploaded however they want:

by submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and its successor's) business… in any media formats and through any media channels.

IMVU Review Part 1

IMVU/Social Network/Web Culture/Review
Found on: IMVU.com

Last week I posted a blog entry on IMVU , a new 3D avatar-centric chat client/service developed by the founder of "There", Mike Harvey.

IMVU currently has a community of over 1 million users and just from the looks of it, a lot more are just around the corner.

After trolling thru their website, I was really impressed with many of the features that seemed to be fresh and innovating for this space.

It Sucks that they don't have a Mac compatible software yet but since their still in beta, I'll let it slide.

Install and registration was a piece of cake and so was creating and customizing my avatar and once you had these steps completed, you were ready to chat.

Everything was aesthetically pleasing - the avatars moved with grace, the environments were full of detail and there were several to pick from -- my favorite so far is the Farris wheel.

The avatars are cute but not cute like Habbo cute, more like Anime cute; somewhere between "There" avatars and "Second Life" Sims. Speaking of cute, the IMVU avatars have a choice of half dozen or so expressions to select from like, "smile" "laugh" and "thumbs up".

So, there I was, sitting in a virtual pseudo "Starbucks" with some guy name Jose, having my first live IMVU session....chit, chat, chit, chat; I found out that he lived in Spain, his favorite band was Coldplay and that he prefered Bebo over Myspace.

To be continued...part 2 next week.

Essembly, designed last year by Joe Green, 23, a friend and former Harvard classmate of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is the emerging online social network of the serious-minded. Like Facebook and MySpace, the site is free and lets users browse friends' photos and personal information. But unlike more organic networks, it actively promotes intellectual discussion. In the spirit of collegiate debate, Essembly users spar over declarations of opinion called "resolves." They also identify other members as "allies" and "nemeses" based on ideological similarities. "On Facebook, people rack up 'friends' like there's no tomorrow," Green says. "What really is missing is a connection between people based on how they think."

Wal-Mart becoming a competitor to MySpace?

Wal-Mart/News/Article/Brian White
Found on: bloggingstocks.com

This was a good one after reading about it -- Wal-Mart's new MySpace-ish website for the totally uncool teenager at its "School Your Way" website -- and its just about as far-fetched and kitschy as I have seen in some time. What are they trying to do here -- re-invent the wheel in the worst possible way? This is most likely a marketing experiment, but you never know how things like this will turn out -- perhaps everyone will migrate from MySpace over to Wal-Mart. Not.

Teenagers and entry-college people are generally the most faddish and entranced by fashion and trends, and it is hard to say if this marketing demographic will gravitate towards Wal-Mart as a fashionable trendsetter. Wal-Mart vs. Abercrombie? That's a rather odd comparison to visualize, yet that is exactly what Wal-Mart is trying to accomplish here from my perspective. The ad agency that created the campaign, GSD&M of Austin, Texas, must have some interesting research to back up up what they created.

MySpace sent out a notice to all of its users late yesterday, saying the worm only appears to have affected people with vulnerable Flash players. Last week, Security Fix urged readers to upgrade their players to v. 9.0, noting that Adobe had fixed a flaw which could let bad guys hijack your browser if you were to merely browse a Web site that exploits the vulnerability. The Adobe update fixes the vulnerability in The patch fixes the vulnerability Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape and Opera.

A Kanawha County man who was arrested earlier this week on an arson charge after police saw a MySpace.com posting about the crime was arrested again Thursday after police say he fled from a deputy on his all-terrain vehicle while his driver’s license was suspended, court records show.

About 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputy R.L. Keglor tried to pull over David A. Fugate, 20, who was riding an ATV on Campbells Creek Drive, but Fugate fled up Spring Fork Drive, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

On Monday, the victim gave investigators a printout from a message board on a juvenile’s online MySpace.com account in which Fugate claimed he was one of the people who threw the jars at the house, according to the criminal complaint.

Top Ten MySpace Clichés

Myspace/Web Culture/Website
Found on: worstofmyspace.com

The worstofmyspace website basically showcases the worst user profiles and myspace pages that are out today, it's irreverent and funny as hell.

I've posted the TOP TEN MySpace Clichés that I found on the site - it's so painfully true...it's brilliant!

  1. Horrible page design: Do you like hurting people’s eyes? Was there some reason you thought people could read yellow text on top of some god-awful background picture? Do you really want people to read your page, or are you just bored?
  2. Shirtless dudebro self-portrait in the bathroom mirror: My, you’re a narcissistic a**hole.
  3. Music: I like everything!”: It’s not true. You don’t like everything, and if you do, you lack what’s called “taste”.
  4. “Books: Reading waht is that lol lol”: It was cool to be dumb back in 6th grade. Now you’re just a moron.
  5. The stupid f**king sideways heart (<3): akhgiuahsgl *&#@%” Dammit, I hate this!
  6. Sh**ty holding-camera-at-arm’s-length self-portrait: Look, at least have a friend take it.
  7. Streaming Top 40 video: I’ve heard it seven million times. Thanks for making me listen to it again.
  8. Girls talking about how a guy’s money doesn’t matter: Sure. Yeah. Uh huh. K.
  9. Porn stars/supermodels on your friend list: They’re fake, moron.
  10. “Heroes: My parents”: Booooring!

BlueDot Launches - MySpace Meets Del.icio.us

Bluedot/Social Bookmarking/Social Networks/Peter Cashmore
Found on: Mashable.com

BlueDot, which launched at Gnomedex last Friday, is a beautifully-designed social bookmarking site with a more personal feel. The 10-person company is based in Seattle, and they’ve raised $1.5 million in angel funding from notable investors including former Starbucks Senior VP Don Valencia and former Microsoft Senior VP Richard Fade. The site has more than 2,200 users and 30,000 bookmarks (or “Dots”). They’ve been testing the service for the past 7 months.

BlueDot also includes a MySpace-style social network. You can add friends to your network and create groups of friends - you can then publish your bookmarks exclusively to these users (your family, for instance). It’s also very visual: users have profile photos that appear all over the site, and each bookmark is accompanied by an image. What’s more, you can customize your profile page by choosing a background pattern and color. And of course there’s RSS support and widgets to place on your blog or MySpace page.

Relay For Life returns to Second Life for a second year of Relay. This year we are developing technology for virtual pledge cards, sponsorships, teams and other features. We are working to capture Second Life’s® near-infinite potential for creativity and collaboration. This adventurous new virtual setting will allow people to participate in Relay regardless of their geographic distances or physical limitations.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in May 1985 when a colorectal surgeon ran around a track in Tacoma, Washington, for 24 hours, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. Today Relay For Life is held in more than 4,400 communities in the United States and in 21 countries across the globe. To date, Relay For Life has raised more than $1.5 billion to help the Society accelerate the progress against cancer by saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people to fight back against this disease.

Friendster granted key social networking patent

Friendster/News/Article/Nate Anderson
Found on: arstechnica.com

Friendster, the once high-flying social network, has recently found its wings clipped by money problems and long load times. Though the site was once hailed as the "next big thing" on the Internet, the crown was quickly passed to MySpace instead (recently gobbled up by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.). Friendster hasn't had any such luck, despite putting themselves up for sale, but they have received some recent good news: more venture capital is coming, and a key patent application has been approved.

Rock N Roll Buddha?

MyPOPspace/Website/News/Update
Found on: mypopspace.com

I finally had some time to work on my banner image for the site, it's something I've wanted to do for awhile now. The picture of Buddha was taken at my Mother's Buddist temple; he was pointing his finger in the air a la John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, so I added the other finger to give him more of a rock n roll attitude a la Ronnie James Dio in Holy Diver - love it.

Honestly, I liked the old banner but it was time for a change, so hope you guys like it.

Another Social Networking Site?

iBloks/News/Article/Cliff Edwards
Found on: businessweek.com

Another day, another social networking site. A group of former Microsoft and Apple employees this fall plan to formally launch iBloks, a sort of digital scrapbooking site that lets users customize music, games and photos.

The company hopes to make money off selling "mods" that can be downloaded and used with the different forms of media. At an unveiling of the beta in San Francisco, for instance, company execs showed a simple drag and drop process for creating a Valentine's card.

Today's Top 3 Digg Videos

Digg/Social Bookmarking/Web Culture
Found on: Digg.com

I thought it would be fun to start posting the top three "NON" tech news stories users are digging on the new and improved Digg version 3.0.

Here's today's top three "Gaming" stories as of this post:

1)First PS3 Bundle over $1,000!!

PS3 bundle first price set at $1016

left
823 diggs

2)New Super Mario Bros. Challenge Mode

Thought you ’d done all there was to do with New Super Mario Bros? You rocked Bowser Jr’s face off, collected all the Star Coins, and figured you were the cat’s pajamas? Think again, young whipper snappers

left
809 diggs

3)Nintendo's Wii may get early launch

Industry observers expect company's new video game machine to launch before the PlayStation 3 - perhaps by a month or more.

left
790 diggs

Now rememeber, depending on the number of diggs these stories get, you may or may not see them on the Entertainment homepage and since Digg version 3 is still in BETA, you will need to have a Digg user account to access "NON" tech containers

Irish schools to block MySpace and Bebo

Myspace/Bebo/News/Article/MCP
Found on: MyCrimeSpace.com

I found this blog post on MyCrimeSpace.com, it orginated from an article found on the "Irish Independent" website.

The controversial and hugely popular Bebo and MySpace.Com websites will be banned in all schools from September.

The schools will have a content filtering system which will block out these so-called social networking sites.

It will also block all illegal and harmful sites, pornography, hate sites and racist sites.

By September, all schools will be on a broadband network which is being organised by the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE), a government agency.

Bebo is organised around schools and colleges and is widely used in Ireland.
