Simon Dawes has 5194 friends (as of this post)

The night I saw Simon Dawes open for Dios Malos at the historic El Rey Theartre in Los Angeles , I remember saying to my wife Molly; "WOW - these guys are so cool, why haven't we heard or seen these guys around before?"

When we got home that night, I went straight to my computer and logged onto Myspace and found their profile, which lead me to their EP "Simon Dawes" and now their new full length album "What No One Hears".

A cross between Pavement and Camper Van Beethoven with a dash of the Beach Boys circa the Pet Sounds album; Simon Dawes knows how to infuse old with the new and brings something special to the table.

Mysteries of adolescence infuse social internet sites

Social Networks/News/Article/Chris Nuttall
Found on: FT.com

Social networking sites are beginning to suffer the same growing pains as the teenagers fuelling their expansion – they have little idea what the future holds and the grown-ups, as in advertisers, analysts and old media, are not really sure how to relate to them.

They are also growing up fast, in all kinds of unexpected places; their friends can be fickle and their activities can offend.

News Corp’s MySpace is the hottest new kid on the block with 65m unique visitors last month. Although the comScore research firm still rates it third worldwide behind Yahoo’s Geocities and MSN Spaces with 116m and 101m visitors respectively, MySpace members grew 111 per cent over six months and the average minutes each one spends on MySpace per month is 184, compared to just four minutes for Geocities.

For Teens, MySpace.com Is Just So Last Year

Myspace/News/Article/Jillian Cohan
Found on: ecommercetimes.com

When it became all the rage to have a MySpace page, Luly Larios joined the social networking Web site.

She rarely posts on her MySpace page, though. Instead, the high school sophomore logs on to Bebo.com, a site for high school and college students. The interface is simple, the graphics are better, and she finds more of her friends from school there.

"I'm computer illiterate," Larios said. "The easier it is to work the better."

Losing Appeal

MySpace recently eclipsed more traditional Web sites to become one of the Top 10 Internet destinations. The site has also raised concerns about user safety, thanks to several widely publicized incidents of cyberstalking.

However, the biggest social-networking spot may not stay on top for long. Teens like Larios are increasingly finding other social networks that meet their needs -- and that aren't as well known to their parents.

Virtual nightclub offers teens alter egos

PCDmusiclounge/News/Article/Greg Sandoval
Found on: CNET.com

School dances were once the training ground for teens to learn to interact with the opposite sex.

If Andrew Littlefield has his way, young people will be honing their social skills within his virtual nightclub, which features all the trappings of a trendy hotspot: dim lights, Jacuzzi and bouncers. Littlefield is the architect of The Lounge, an Internet nightclub that threw open its virtual doors late Sunday.

Future generations of young people may not have to worry about whether they've chosen the right clothes or haircut. Once logged in at pcdmusiclounge.com, club-goers choose a computer-generated character to represent themselves. They can put their own stamp on their character's appearance by choosing from fashionable hair and clothing styles. No need to be self conscious about looking awkward on the dance floor; Littlefield hired a choreographer who personally approved a range of moves so the alter egos of the Lounge's patrons are sure to look good while they boogie.

Pair held over alleged MySpace hacking

Found on: News.com.au

TWO New York teenagers are reportedly in police custody after allegedly threatening to give out the personal information of users of MySpace.com unless they are paid $US150,000 ($200,000).

Associated Press reported Shaun Harrison, 18, and Saverio Mondelli, 19, of Suffolk County, face computer crime and extortion charges after they allegedly hacked into the social networking site and stole personal information from MySpace users.

MySpace allows users to create their own websites where they post photos and blogs. The sites allow users to create networks of friends.

After MySpace blocked them from the site, the pair allegedly threatened to distribute a method for stealing information unless MySpace paid them $US150,000.

Found on: Youtube.com

Sixteen year old singer/songwriter, Jennifer Harding is "Unfabulous" and I, along with hundreds of other YouTube members that happen to stumble onto her home made music videos are lucky for it.

Jennifer has such a passion for her music, along with an enormous amount of raw talent, you find yourself immersed in her songs and wanting more...so is she a star waiting to be born? I don't know but after watching her videos, I wouldn't be suprised if she were - watch for yourself.

"Bitter"

LYRICS:
Bitter about it
She tried to fight it
But she couldn't hide it
It would come back a-and

She wouldn't let go
Too stubborn we all know
She'd always say no
And put up her hand

"I'm better than this" she sai---d
"Waste of my time,
Won't do it again."

People would ask her
Then they would tell her
What was her problem?
She'd never say yes

Scared to let someone
Come and just roam in
She didn't want that
She was ruthless

"I'm better than this" she sai---d
"Waste of my time,
Won't do it again.

Bot on way to catch YouTube copyright violators?

YouTube/News/Article/Russell Shaw
Found on: ZDNET

Now here's an idea that is needed, and may already be in the works.

How about a bot that crawls YouTube videos for apparently unauthorized, copyright violations? The type of violations that given the ease of tv-to-PC digital transfer are easy to commit?

Such as video clips of tv shows, such as "Lost?" Speaking of, that's a YouTube "Lost" clip at the top of this post.

There's a few ways this could be facilitated.

First, television programmers and movie studios might want to either imbed a digital video watermark inside their content that could be machine-readable by copyright-violation sniffer bots they would search YouTube with.

The Clicker: YouTube's win-win-win

YouTube/News/Article/Ryan Block
Found on: Engadet

Recently we talked about the upstart sensation, YouTube. As a social phenomenon and a growing entity, YouTube's rise to glory has been nothing short of meteoric. In just one year YouTube has taken its business from zero to pumping out more than 35 Million streams per day, and it's still growing. That's pretty darn impressive, but, as the immortal Rod Tidwell once said, "Show me the money!"

You see -- there's a fairly developed pattern when it comes to replacing existing media outlets with their internet counterparts. The first step is to see if people will buy what you're selling when the cost is zero. YouTube has clearly been successful in that regard. In fact, their success has even convinced media giant AOL to create their own (nearly) feature-for-feature knock-off (see: http://communityvideo.aol.com/).

John Lacko is a very talented illustrator with a mission...he wants your vote.

From a comment he left on my Myspace page:

I need help from my MySpace friends to nominate me TODAY!

Adidas held an international design competition last month to customize one
of their classic 3 stripe shoes. I entered a few weeks ago and won a finalist spot
on the Adicolor web site. Now the finalists are being scored on how many people vote for their designs on the website. I was hoping my "myspace" friends could lend me a hand and vote for my design by going to the Adicolor FINALIST GALLERY. My work is in the "OTHER GALLERY CANDIDATES" section. Please vote for my design under: Lacko / ID: 272 / us

If you know me, you know that two of my passions are street art and kicks and they don't come any better then what John Lacko is doing with his Adicolor piece -- I voted for him and so should you.

Ziki does it!

Ziki/Website/Social Network
Found on: Ziki.com

Ziki (still in beta release) uses "tags" to help describe yourself, your background, your interests, etc - anything you'd like to tell others about yourself.

By tagging yourself and describing who you are, you make it easier for other Ziki members to find your profile. Tagging also enables Ziki to use these "common" interests or tags to suggest other members that you might like to meet -- you just have to click on a button and you get sent 10 Ziki profiles that are similar to yours.

My favorite feature is the Ziki RSS aggregater which gives you the ability to add feeds right to your Ziki page. This makes it really simple to manage and share all your digital content e.g. blog posts, pictures, videos, links and recommendations.

Ziki claims to be the first "open social network" connecting people base on who they are...so far so good!

Arson on MySpace?

U.S. Teens Arrested After Bragging About Arson on MySpace

ROCKVILLE, Md — Two teenagers were charged with setting fires in suburban Washington after they bragged about the blazes on MySpace.com, authorities said.

The 17-year-old schoolmates were involved in 17 fires in Montgomery County, fire officials said Friday. The teens face 22 charges, including two counts each of first-degree arson and four counts of second-degree arson.

Their names were not released because they were charged as juveniles.

Stores, vehicles, a bowling alley and two school buses were set on fire between Jan. 20 and April 16. Investigators got a tip to check out the online social networking site MySpace.com, where they found photos and descriptions.

"The significant thing is they posted on the Internet, and bragged about the fires, and that certainly allowed us to break the case," county Fire Chief Thomas W. Carr Jr. said. "They posted photos of these fires."

The teens are being held at a juvenile detention center.

Ban Teens From Social Networking Sites?

House Bill Seeks to Ban Teens From Social Networking Sites

A Pennsylvania congressman has introduced legislation that would ban minors from accessing social networking Web sites such as MySpace, and forbid libraries from making such access available.

The bill, known as the "Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006," was introduced Wednesday in the House by Michael G. Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., a first-term representative. The bill has also been labeled as H.R. 5319, a Fitzpatrick representative said Thursday.

However, the bill uses extremely broad language to define a "social networking" site, which would theoretically eliminate several Ziff-Davis Web sites, as well as other highly-trafficked Web sites across the Internet.

"Sites like Myspace and Facebook have opened the door to a new online community of social networks between friends, students and colleagues," Fitzpatrick said in a statement posted to his Web site. "However, this new technology has become a feeding ground for child predators that use these sites as just another way to do our children harm."

The Islands borrow from a long list of indie influences but they're just eclectic enough to create a very unique sound of their very own and it works.

Their album "RETURN TO THE SEA" is definitely worth logging into the iTunes' music store -- go find it.

'Second Life' fending off denial-of-service attacks

Second Life/News/Article/Daniel Terdiman

CNET News.com

The popular virtual world "Second Life" was shut down twice over the weekend as its publisher, Linden Lab, fended off denial-of-service attacks.

The attacks took the form of someone creating self-replicating objects in the world that began to crash servers and forced San Francisco-based Linden Lab to temporarily close down the entire "Second Life" grid.

This is not the first time "Second Life" has been hit by denial-of-service attacks. Last fall, it was hit with similar assaults. Shortly thereafter Philip Rosedale, the company's CEO, told "Second Life" members that the company planned to turn the responsible parties in to the FBI.

Myspace Advertising Agency?

Found on: adverlab.blogspot.com

MySpaceMan claims to be the “first Myspace Advertising Agency of it’s kind” and says it uses its own profile to gain tons of friends and then leaves promo comments on their profile pages. The price of a thousand friends these days? $79.

Forbes recently ran a story on the undeground MySpace economy and mentioned a few ad tools that have emerged: “Another subset of sites has cashed in on MySpace’s popularity by creating and selling software designed to automate tasks within the network, such as inviting and confirming friends, posting messages and sending bulletins.”

Here’s a MySpace page for Wendy’s Square Burger done as a part of their It’s Good to be Square campaign. The square burger’s profile has 90,868 friends, with fans leaving notes such as this one:

i love you square.
you make me warm inside.
thank you
for your squareness

And a beautiful comment to a related post on O’Relly Radar: “What happens when adverts sign up to be friends with each other?”

AIM Pages BETA

AIM Pages/News/Article/Staci Kramer
Found on: paidcontent.org

AIM Pages: AOL wants to be the 24/7 home base for as many users as possible hence the AIM Page, a social networking site/home page/home base that stays active even when the buddy list is offline. Kerry Parkins, director, key audiences product marketing, calls it “a very natural extension” for AIM”s existing social network. Instead of people joining a created community a la Classic AOL, they have their own with the buddy list they already use at the core.

Unlike walled-garden Classic AOL, AIM Pages is built on giving users ways to collect and connect to various parts of the web — and each other — from one base. For instance, users can add a flickr module. “Our approach is not to get you to leave flickr but to super-set your stuff from flickr,” explained Parkins. Other modules focus on AOL content, like the Top 11 list from AOL Music; options will be limited at first with more modules being introduced on a rolling basis.

The Stylehive is new kind of website?

Stylehive/Website/Social Network

The Stylehive has recently
become one of my favorite new Social Networks, combining both my passion for lovely things and the ability to bookmark them using the web.

The site is still in Alpha stage so it's a little buggy but I have seen recent improvements and I keep going back for more.

The Stylehive is new kind of website:

- a collaborative shopping community. It is a place where contributors can work together to share and discover the hottest stores, designers, trends, and must have products.

- is a collection of all the best products, brands, designers and stores discovered and tagged by the Hive community.

- is the unique product and vision of entrepreneur and CEO Michael Carrier. Michael has enlisted a talented team of technology and online shopping experts who are passionate about making it easier to find the most interesting products, brands, and designers on the web, while providing a simple way to save and share these finds with others.

Based in San Francisco, the Stylehive brings together the distinct worlds of technology and trendsetting fashion, shopping and online retail.

We’ve created tools that enable a community focused on amplifying the “buzz” factor in the online shopping world.

Filmmaker David Lehre Interview

Myspace/Profile/Interview/David Lehre
Found on: washingtonpost.com

David Lehre
is a 21-year-old short filmmaker who rose to fame after one of his shorts, called "Myspace: The Movie," was broadcast on Youtube.com earlier this year. Lehre, who lives in Washington, Mich., said he has been courted by MTV U and several networks and movie studios to create entertainment ideas that speak to young people. Here is a transcript of his interview with Washington Post staff writer Sara Kehaulani Goo.

Sara: Tell me about how you got started. It sounds like things really took off once you posted your "MySpace: The Movie" online.

David: I've been making movies since I've been in the 10th grade. I've always loved doing it and I have a huge portfolio of, like, over 50 films I've done over the past years with my best friends. I knew it was fun and high-quality, professional stuff. I wanted a bigger audience for it. I've been trying to get more exposure for it. It dawned on me a couple months ago. It was, like, man, "Myspace: The Movie." It's never been done. If I do "MySpace: The Movie," everybody--60 million users--is going to want to watch it and pass it along to all their friends and it's going to get all my other movies seen. So it's kind of like a promotional vehicle to get all my other work seen.
